TRIORA MONESI

Monesi

Monesi

Monesi is part of Triora’s essence.  Situated at an altitude of 1376m above sea level, it was once a sought-after ski resort with a local economy primarily based around tourism. Sadly, since the severe flooding of November 24th 2016, the village has been waiting for a new lease of life. The aftermath of the flooding was disastrous and to this day it is still impossible to reach Monesi. Following a huge landslide, the connecting road from Mendatica is now inaccessible and a second possible landslide threatens to hit buildings and businesses which have been abandoned for the last two years. Local institutions have been trying to work out a plan to reopen a link to the village. This operation will be essential in allowing repairs and maintenance work to begin on the houses and buildings fundamental to Monesi’s rebirth. It must not be forgotten that in a not too distant past, Monesi was once an important winter sports destination. Its chair lift service and skiing slopes that combined affordable prices with a genuine family ambiance, made this a tourist destination par excellence. Summer was also an important season as the village attracted lovers of the outdoors thanks to its beautiful and pristine landscapes that could be discovered while hiking or mountain biking along the numerous trails which continue into both the Piedmont region or France. For now though, Monesi can only dream of waking up from its slumber and of going back to being “a mini Switzerland,” as it was once known back in the ’50s. A memory that still lives on in many local families minds.
